Sunshine= productive day outside!

Big chickens!
Onions planted...check!

Chicks getting some sun...check!
Other indoor plants getting some sun too!
Our little adventurer
Nothing like a fire and marshmallow roasting to finish off a great day!

A couple weeks ago we enjoyed a couple of nice days...and well you know what that means.  Working outside!  Our greenhouse is finally, mostly finished and up and running, I will post some pics later of our plants in there!  But it was time to let our chicks get some air and also plant my seeds for the garden and baskets! We finished off our very productive day outside with a backyard fire and some marshmallow roasting...perfect!

For Easter this year I decided to TRY to take some cute pics of Jack to put into a card...may I emphasize the TRY part again because that really sums up my picture taking abilities and Jacks attention span!  Here are a few of the better ones that I got.  Actually considering all Jack did really quite well as a model!

Homegrown goodness!

As you can see below our chickens have really started to up their production! We are averaging about 4 eggs a day. Three of these are layed in the coop, the 4th is layed in our firepit by our one Rhodie red who likes to escape the coop despite me trimming her flight feathers! After about a month of small eggs we are finally getting some "regular" sized eggs! Jack gets very excited when its time to collect!

My first head of broccoli, I'm stoked!

Justin's favorite, lemon cucumbers. He will eat 'em right off the vine!

With all the nice weather we've been having our garden has been doing what it should have a couple months ago. Nonetheless we are enjoying our farm and all the things it provides us!

Momma's little gardener

Jack watering momma's hanging plant

He was excellent out in the garden

Hey, the grass looked thirsty too I guess.

Friday was a beautiful day getting up into the 70's. After hanging out with Papa and Gma Pat we brought home some worms for the chickens then spent some time working in the garden, watering, playing in the water and in general having a wonderful afternoon.

Chicken update

Just thougt I would share an update on our chickens. We've had them now for three weeks and its crazy how much they've grown. Justin decided that since it was so sunny this last weekend it was the perfect time to move the chickens out to the barn. It has a little door that we can open on sunny days to let them get more accustomed to the outside till they get all their feathers and we can leave them out permanently.

Henry is still quite excited by them and loves to "keep and eye" on them

Jack also takes his job seriously and helps mommy check on the chickens

Here is just a quick video of Jack and the chickens. He is getting much better at saying words and if you listen close you can hear him say "chickens" at the end!

Sunshine!

Friday was a day full of sun here in the northwest! Thank you Jesus for small blessings! We made the most of it and headed out to the zoo, as we were getting ready to leave Justin surprised me by getting off work early to join us. This was his first time to the zoo with Jack and I and it was the sweetest surprise. However it is also spring break and apparently EVERYONE had the same idea of a day at the zoo. Once we finally got parked and in though it didn't matter. Jack was having the time of his life sitting up on dads shoulders to get a birdseye view of all the animals.

This face was made the whole time, it was hilarious, he kept saying "wow" over and over much to the amusment of passing strangers.

If you look closely in the background you can see a wild african dog, most of the animals were also enjoying the sunshine and energetic as a result!

Little man and mommy checking out the mongoose!

After we got home to the farm we had to check on the chickens in their new coop and make sure they were doing well. Jack and Henry take their new chore seriously.

So far the chicks seems to be enjoying the increased living space and have been stretching their wings a bit as they attempt to fly. Can you see how much they've grown? I can't believe it. All in all we had a most fabulous day enjoying the sun and some good family time together.

Happy Sabbath!

Chicken coops and kids tables

Happy Thursday everyone! My what a busy week we've had here at our house. Yesterday our chicken coop arrived which I'm sure will make the chickens happy. They've been itching to roost or perch on something and I'm anxious to get them acclamated to their new home. Its made from cedar and our whole garage smells just delicious. I just might have to start stashing cedar boards around our house! :)

Justin loves the wheels to move it around

It has this great little run built on,
so the chicks can roam safely if we are not around to keep an eye on them.

We also picked up this amazing table made for Jack by a family friend. He made it from a wine barrel and it truly is one of a kind! I've seen some taller pub style ones he's made but not a little pint sized one. It fits so perfectly in Jack's corner, definitely adds that special touch. Jack has already climbed up on the chairs to perch at "his" table, something he never seemed that interested in before. All in all the table is a big hit with child and parents!

I can envision an adult version of this little set up in a coffee shop! :) Thursday fun, hope your week is going as well!

Welcome to the farm

This weekend was a rather busy one for us. Filled with friends, fun, and new baby chicks. Justin and I have been throwing around the idea lately of having chickens for our own eggs and also because we think it would be a great chore for Jack once he's a little older. We decided to get baby chicks instead of full-grown hens so that we would be more familiar with them and them with us. Jack LOVES them, Henry does too but most likely for different reasons! :) I probably spend the most time hanging out in the garage with them as I find their interactions facinating! Here are some pics from our weekend, enjoy! Oh and if you have any chicken knowledge to impart I would love to hear!

Jack and Henry find farming exhausting work

We have 2 Rhode Islands Reds, not sure what the black one is but she is my favorite. She always comes over to the side when I'm there and if I hold her doesn't squirm but sits quietly.

This is our Barred Rock chick, she has to be where everyone else is and pushes her way to the middle of the group quite frequently.

This is our Golden Wyandotte, she is a week older than the rest and they all copy her.

So that makes 5 chicks altogether. I don't know that we will end up with that many by the time we move them to their coop, but so far they all are doing well and seem to be adjusting just fine.

Here is just a little clip of them. I am hoping to video them again and catch some of their antics because they are really quite the little characters already. Well thats it for now, thanks for visiting the "farm" and hope you all had a great weekend!
